Apples & Owls does not promote cigarette smoking….but with packaging as good as this, we can make exceptions. On second thought, I highly recommend Cigarette Juice instead. Anyhow, ASYL is responsible for art direction of these which not only make it easier to distinguish flavors, but instead of a flip top opening, they slide out from the slide. Skillionaire!

We here at Apples & Owls raved about MGMT in 2008 but that was 512 days ago, to be exact. Richard Carey’s vinyl packaging redesign for MGMT = thumbs up. MGMT circa 2009 = thumbs down.

Great idea, but I would’ve liked to have seen Frosted Mini Wheats instead. Some love for Honey Nut Cheerios, perhaps?

Here’s the deal. I went to my local grocer to get eggs and had the hardest time differentiating the types of eggs by packaging. Brown, white, cage-free, free-range, this brand, that brand, etc. And mind you, I know eggs. I grew up in a farming town where the highlight of the year was the “Butter and Eggs Day Parade,” so I take pride in my knowledge of certain dairy products. Well, then came Si Thorpe and his excellent egg packaging that not only has some nice typography, but communicates clearly. About time.

Just when I was thinking that my owl collection was complete, I came across these delightful toys. Peleda is a new line by Toy Tokyo and Nathan Jurevicius of wind-up owls. Uber cute and the stylization of the owls are reminiscent of vintage sculptures and kitchen goods. And did I mention the packaging is very appealing as well?

Shapeaspect is the work of New Zealand based designer and illustrator, Jeremy Evans. I’m loving the simplicity and graphic nature of this record packaging. Lots more goodies here.

And they do it again. The folks at Non-Format are responsible for the cd and poster artwork for The Chap’s album, Mega Breakfast. Its all that I need to make me happy: lovely typography, white space and a chocolate covered, sprinkle dipped, shiny balloon dog.
