Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia :: Typography ::
Thursday, June 12th, 2008Reason #86 why Barcelona is amazing: Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia, or more commonly known as the Gaudi’s unfinished cathedral. As the director of the project starting in 1882, he worked with numerous architects and artists on the cathedral and when he died in 1926, he had not yet completed it. One of my favorite parts is the carved typography found on the entrance of the passion facade. I love everything about it. The sans serif type, the kerning, the texture on the letterforms (which by the way, if you look closely, some letters have other words carved on top!). It reminds me of letterpress type blocks and is so beautiful close up. Imagine the time and craftsmanship it took to carve this whole piece. That will even make me say JESUS!
