“Dr. Martin Luther King’s was a life lived in loving service to others. As we honor that legacy, it’s not a day just to pause and reflect — it’s a day to act.” Some wise words from President Barack Obama with more to come tomorrow.(!!!) So if you have the day off today, take part in some public service, a great way to show your true admiration for the great MLK. While I don’t have the day off today, I am going to argue that graphic design by nature is a service to the public. But from what I’m working on, I’d have to say that there are probably more enriching services I could be participating in.

Last week’s New York Times Magazine marked the 15th annual Lives They Lived issue, which celebrates the life and times of 24 very different lives. Not only were the articles wonderfully written, but the typography of the magazine cover as well as headers were a beautiful, modern script with extreme thicks and thins illustrated by Nancy Harris Rouemy.

While I always was more fond of using MySpace than Facebook, things have evolved. I thought those news-feeds were too intrusive. They can track every comment I make, every edit I do and share it with all my friends? Well, now I see it as Facebook’s best feature since it makes the lurking process more efficient. Instead of going to all my friend’s individual pages, its all right there for me, to satisfy my ambient awareness issues. The NY Times has a great article on the brave new world of digital intimacy.
