AfterAll_1

After All is the Los Angeles based duo of Shaniqwa Jarvis and Joanna Bean. This neo geo piece was created in collaboration with photographer Lydia Burkhalter. I want to go where waves look like this. Google earth will know.

WeedsJoint_1

To promote the premiere of the tv series, Weeds, sent out giant joints! kinda. Bouquets of hemp plants, sans thc, (darn.) rolled up in papers to create a flower gram were sent out. How clever. And tempting.

Andy Warhol :: Time Capsule 21 ::

November 18th, 2008

Warhol_Capsules

Here’s the deal folks. I’ve become pretty fascinated/obsessed with time capsules lately. I think its because I live closer to where I grew up and I distinctly remember putting some epherema in a box and burying it somewhere near my elementary school. Now its pretty uncool if I were to go dig it back up, assuming it hasn’t been dug up by a construction company building a condominum named something along the lines of Cherry Bark. Anyhow, I’m thinking of creating another one, this time, filled with good stuff like porn and a 7-11 Obama cup. Now that’s something people would be excited to find, unlike the Curious George doll I left in my last one.

Nevertheless, in my research of time capsules, I came across an interesting find. Andy Warhol kept ongoing time capsules, basically stuffing everyday and random items into cardboard boxes. He began in 1974 and most never knew of his capsules until his death in 1987. The Warhol Museum has the collection, but their web site has a great interactive piece on the items in certain boxes. Categorized by content, its interesting to see what he felt was significant enough to put into this box.

Rebecca Maeve Manley :: Knitted Nose Bleed ::

KnittedNoseBleed

Playful idea! I want to know what a knitted booger would look like. Also makes a lovely scarf. I can’t help but think how popular analog techniques have become in design, but one thing is clear, Miss Rebecca Maeve Manley did it WELL.

TT:NT :: Birthday Ring ::

November 17th, 2008

TTNT_ring

With all the options for sending a birthday wish these days, whether its an e-card or virtual gift, its always nice to bring it back to basics. A damn good birthday card. The smart folks over at TT:NT* created a birthday card with a pop out, ready-to-assemble, paper ring. A much better alternative to gaudy birthday tiaras** and god forbid, a birthday sash. Sheesh.

*TT:NT is Tithi Kutchamuch and Nutre Arayavanish.

**Reconsidering friendship over giving such an item is completely acceptable.

YouTube :: Royksopp ::

November 16th, 2008

You may be thinking, Royksopp is so old school Miss Apples and Owls. Even the Geico lizard is up on them already. Yes, this is true. However, a recent discovery of their video and their use of infographics for the video has altered my world. I’m in the datasphere and I can’t get out. (nor do I want to.)

Audrey Kawasaki’s latest show opened last weekend at the Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. The neatest part is that she recreated her studio in the gallery, adorned with her sketches, vintage do-dads and things that inspire her. Pretty much a life-sized diorama. If you’re in the area, be sure to check it out.

I can’t sleep. So I’ve tried reading which usually always makes me tired, but now I’m up-to-date with The New Yorker and IDN Magazine. I’d try drinking warm milk, but unless it soy, I’ll still be up if you know what I mean. So now I’m on to YouTube-ing ridiculous videos. Try this one out too.

CSULB Jr. Design Show :: Look -> See ::

Look Graphic Design Junior Show Timelapse from Khoa Tran on Vimeo.

It’s always nice to stay up to date with what crazy design students are experimenting with. This past weekend was the opening of the California State University Long Beach Junior Design Show, Look–>See, that showcases the 24 newly accepted design student’s portfolios. And while I was unable to attend, the talented Mr. Khoa Tran made a video timelapse of the show. It’s just as good as being there, just 20x faster. Good work everyone!
